Halibut was an important food resource for Northwest Coast societies, rivalling salmon in some regions. Halibut is a deep-water ocean fish whose image frequently appears in the art, and its representation in two-dimensional and shallow relief carving is often appealing and amusing. Halibut images make logical choices for bowls and platters.
